Leading practice sustainability reporting: A review of health, safety, environment and community reporting
November 2004 – March 2005

The brief:
The Leighton Holdings Limited Board wished to understand where it and the six group companies are positioned in terms of health, safety, environment and community reporting. The Board also asked Futureye’s advice on whether the organisational culture has the capacity to keep up with trends facing the industries in which Leighton Holdings Limited operates in the medium-term.

Our solution:
Futureye conducted a major review of the organisation’s reporting and established a business case for transparency on sustainability. First, we benchmarked the reporting of the organisation and the group companies and eight other companies in similar industries. The process benchmarked annual, sustainability and HSEC reports containing selected indicators for each of the categories ‘culture and approach’, ‘health and safety’, ‘workplace and people’, ‘environment’ and ‘community.’

Futureye facilitated a series of workshops with Executives at Leighton and each of the group companies to discuss the usefulness of the indicators used in the benchmarking process and to discover where people believed their respective company was positioned in reporting and where they would like to be positioned. Futureye also interviewed a range of experts on short to medium-term trends in the construction and mining industries to inform the appropriate phasing of the reporting requirements.

The result:
Leighton Holdings Limited is able to understand how it and each of the group companies are positioned in terms of each other and other companies. It decided on a three-step process to introduce sustainability reporting over a 10 year period to become a reporting leader.
