Mike Waller

Mike Waller advises senior management and boards of public and private sector companies and agencies on corporate and business strategy and strategy execution, primarily in the mining, metals and other basic industry sectors.

He also works with Australian federal and state public sector organisations with commercial responsibilities to help them reach decisions that optimise public policy and commercial objectives.

Experience:

  • Provided strategic advice to the Minister for Transport and Secretary of the Department of Infrastructure on the restructuring of Melbourne’s train and tram systems and to the Minister for the Environment and the Department of Sustainability and Environment on issues of greenhouse, sustainability and energy supply.
  • As a Director of Australia 21, he was a lead author in a 2006 study for the Department of Sustainability & Environment on the delivery of deep cuts in Victoria’s greenhouse gas emissions to 2050. He is currently leading a similar project for the Queensland Government
  • Undertaken an environmental sustainability audit of the Melbourne 2030 structure plan focusing particularly on the link between urban planning, structure and climate change.
  • Chief Economist and head of Environment and Community Relations Policy with BHP Billiton, leading the development of BHP Billiton’s greenhouse strategy, working to the then Managing Director, Paul Anderson which involved the detailed modelling of the company’s emissions profiles.
  • Chaired the Business Council of Australia Greenhouse Committee.
  • Has held senior positions in both the UK Treasury and a number of Australian government departments, including head of the microeconomic division of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet and deputy head of the Department of Transport. While in the Prime Minister’s Department, he was responsible for the development of National Strategies on Ecologically Sustainable Development and Climate Change.
  • Director of Australia 21, a multidisciplinary research body focusing on sustainability
  • Chairman of Sustainability Victoria
  • Senior Research Fellow at Melbourne University working on the Climate Adaptation Science and Policy Initiative
  • He is also a member of the Victorian Government’s Earth Resources Development Council.
