Scott Houston
Futureye Associate

During the course of his career, Scott has worked on a variety of policy issues, including acid rain, asbestos, biodiversity conservation, environmental and community health. As a senior staff member of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) in London and its predecessor organisation, the International Council on Metals and the Environment (ICME), he has been intimately involved in helping the minerals industry transition to sustainable development, including the development of ICMM’s sustainable development framework and ICMM’s landmark position statement on mining and protected areas.

As a consultant, Scott has helped clients in the preparation of SD strategies, development of social performance systems, preparation and verification of SD reports and benchmarking corporate governance frameworks against international standards and voluntary initiatives.  His work has included:

 

Strategy development

  • Assisted in the development of a comprehensive SD strategy for a business unit of a major oil and gas company;
  • Developed a corporate reputation strategy for a major mining house on issues related to artisanal miners.

 

Human Rights

  • Assisted in the preparation of a review paper on human rights issues and the mining industry for the ICMM;
  • Prepared a draft human rights standard and guidance document for a Commodity Division of a major multi-national mining company

 

SD Governance

  • Undertook a benchmarking and gap analysis of a major multi-national mining company’s standards against IFC Performance Standards and various voluntary initiatives.
  • Assisted in the development of social performance standards and management system for a mining house with operations based in Africa.

 

SD Reporting

  • Advised clients on SD reporting strategies and road maps that ensure a strategic approach to sustainability reporting.
  • Assisted in the preparation and writing of sustainability reports in accordance with G3 requirements and sector supplements.
  • Assisted in the verification of a GRI report prepared by a major multi-national mining company.

 

 

 

Qualifications

  • Honours BA (Commerce)
  • Post Graduate Studies in Economics
